Nutritional Psychiatry **COMING SOON**

My Philosophy

Welcome to my Nutritional Psychiatry Education hub! At Merkaba Integrative Psychiatry, I believe in the profound connection between what you eat and how you feel. Explore my resources to learn how nutrition can support your mental health and overall well-being.

What Is Nutritional Psychiatry?

Nutritional Psychiatry is a growing field that focuses on the relationship between diet and mental health. Research shows that what we eat significantly impacts our brain function, mood, and emotional well-being.

At Merkaba, we integrate this approach into our care, offering tailored nutritional assessments and recommendations to support your mental health journey.

The Science Behind Food and Mood

  • Gut-Brain Axis: Your gut and brain are connected through the vagus nerve, hormones, and neurotransmitters. A healthy gut microbiome can promote mental wellness.
  • Nutrients for Mental Health: Key nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, magnesium, and probiotics play a vital role in brain function and emotional regulation.
  • Inflammation and Mental Health: Diets high in processed foods and sugar can increase inflammation, which has been linked to depression and anxiety.

How Nutrition Impacts Mental Health Conditions

  • Depression: Diets rich in whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, and fish, are associated with lower rates of depression.
  • Anxiety: Foods containing magnesium, zinc, and omega-3s can reduce anxiety symptoms.
  • ADHD: Nutritional interventions, such as eliminating food dyes and increasing healthy fats, can support focus and behavioral health.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Stabilizing blood sugar and ensuring adequate nutrient intake can support mood stability.

Our Approach to Nutritional Psychiatry

At Merkaba Integrative Psychiatry, I will offer:

  1. Comprehensive Nutritional Assessments: Detailed history of dietary habits. Lab testing for vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, inflammation markers, and gut health.
  2. Personalized Nutrition Plans: Recommendations tailored to your unique needs. Meal plans emphasizing whole, nutrient-rich foods.
  3. Supplement Guidance: Evidence-based recommendations for vitamins, minerals, and probiotics to support mental health.
  4. Collaborative Care: Integration with psychotherapy, medication management, and other treatments for holistic healing.

Tips for a Brain-Healthy Diet

  • Focus on Whole Foods: Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  • Prioritize Healthy Fats: Omega-3 fatty acids from fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts support brain health.
  • Limit Processed Foods: Minimize sugar, refined carbs, and artificial additives.
  • Hydrate: Proper hydration is essential for optimal brain function.
  • Mind Your Gut: Include fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, and kimchi to support gut health.
